Latrines. Women’s Camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau (Revisiting Night and Fog by Alain Resnais, 1956), 2011
Running time: 2:00 minutes | colour
Camera: Marie-Jeanne Musiol
During a journey through the vastness of the extermination camp, I was completely overwhelmed in Birkenau by the sight of an infinite succession of latrines visible through rows of barracks. They resonated with the incessant echo of the wind rushing through their openings. On the site of unspeakable suffering and humiliation, these latrines remain witnesses to the degradation inflicted on the deportees.
Alain Resnais' landmark film Night and Fog recounts Nazi atrocities and includes a few quick shots of the latrines otherwise rarely seen.
